UN:Me: An Psychological Horror That Blends Silent Hill and Social Deduction Gameplay

The latest Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled several intriguing upcoming titles, but one in particular has seized attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure seems to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.

"This is a distinctive experience where a girl harboring several personalities within her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Shattered Mind

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four separate souls, each with their own anxieties and drives. These souls can seize control spontaneously, releasing their innermost phobias upon her suddenly.

Based on revealed gameplay, much of the narrative unfolds within a eerie hospital, while other scenes show the main character navigating a desolate chapel.

A World of Individual Dread

"What are you fearful of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. People in power. Things that appear minor to others can trigger something primal within us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are unique to every individual."

The central gameplay loop involves managing whichever soul surfaces at a particular time. However, these identities will switch against your will during gameplay. During exploration, each soul's fears become exaggerated and assault the girl one after another. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.

Unsettling Aesthetics and a Fatal Decision

At first glance, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is filled with orderlies all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Patients in the lobby have large flowers where their heads should be. Flowers are an ever-present element, contrasting organic elegance with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four personas asserts that the body is rightfully them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."

Once players have deduced a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, because every entity can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.

"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The last one standing could be a fraud. Either way, your choices are final."

UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is available to wishlist on platforms.
