The Way a US Special Forces Veteran Aided the Venezuelan Opposition Leader Escape Her Homeland
This audacious getaway of Venezuelan opposition figure María Corina Machado involved a lengthy, “scary” and very wet boat journey in the pitch black of night, as detailed by the American man who says he led the operation.
A Dangerous Nocturnal Voyage
Bryan Stern, who heads a rescue nonprofit, outlined the mission in a newly published interview. “It was dangerous. It was scary,” said Stern, a US special forces veteran, recounting dark and choppy conditions that simultaneously offered convenient cover for the escape.
“The sea conditions were ideal for us, but not water you'd choose to sail on ... the bigger the swells, the harder it is for radar to see,” Stern said.
He described meeting Machado out at sea after she left the country, where she had been in hiding since August 2024 fearing persecution by the government of President Nicolás Maduro.
A Detailed Escape Plan
Machado embarked on his boat for a 13- to 14-hour journey to an secret location to catch a plane, as part of planned just four days earlier. “This was in the middle of the night – very little moon, a little bit of cloud cover, extremely low visibility, vessels running dark. All of us were pretty wet. My crew and I were drenched. She was also chilled and wet. She endured a grueling passage,” Stern added.
Describing her condition, he commented, “She was very happy. She was very excited. She was exhausted,” and noted about twenty-four people were actively participating within his team.
Confirmation and Concealment
Spokespeople for Machado confirmed that Stern’s foundation was behind the extraction, which commenced earlier in the week. This report follows previous reporting that Machado used a wig and costume to flee her safe house in a suburb of the Venezuelan capital, Caracas.
The veteran declined to share specifics about the ground segment, referencing his company’s future work in the country.
Financing and US Role
He stated publicly the mission was funded through “several benefactors” – with no US officials involved. Official US funds were not used, at least not that I know of,” Stern said.
He said, however, that his group did “unofficially collaborate” with the American armed forces regarding locations and strategy, primarily to prevent being mistakenly fired upon.
Future Plans and Inspiration
The opposition leader stated she had US support to depart Venezuela. She has declared her intention to go back, though the specifics remain uncertain the method or timing.
Stern indicated his group would play no part in a return mission, as it worked only on extracting individuals from countries, not in. “That’s for her to determine for herself. Personally, I advise against returning. Yet she is determined. She is a genuine inspiration,” he concluded.
