The network's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Major Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.
In October of last year, the late-night programming block welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the channel launched a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, evoking a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. During a period often marked by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."
Executive Acclaim
The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and championed its distinctly quirky sensibility.
"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about following this lovable family navigate their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to evolve comedy past its current sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
The Path Forward
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well catalyze that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to bask in the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
