The Diamond Family Personal Video Game of the Year List for The Past Year
So, how did you experience this year in your family? Did it seem truly wonderful as one might claim on online? Full of A-grades for the kids and wild costume celebrations for the adults? Or perhaps it was a ocean of disappointment with only rare enjoyable moments? Could any part be authentic, or have we all become digitally altered synthetic personas with unrealistic smiles?
I've assembled my thoughts for a chat, willing or unwilling, to discuss the most important thing in a calendar year: which video games we enjoyed the most. Let's get started:
Game Oldest Daughter Played the Most
Pikmin
"Is it impossible to pick just one?"
"You can't expect my definitive list."
On her phone, she’s been playing Cityscapes and "attempting to locate adequate healthcare."
"Virtually?"
"In real life."
Title Second Son Played the Most
Overwatch
"I don’t play games on my phone." He took umbrage that I even asked. I respect that.
Game Third Daughter Played the Most
Resident Evil Biohazard
She's attempting to get into theatre school, but when she wasn’t singing, she was tackling Resident Evil. She also spoke at length in great detail about her accomplishments on The Sims, where the Shark has a blooming utopia with infinitely better healthcare than her older sibling has in the real world.
Title the Partner Played the Most
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She began the year at sixty percent completion and ended it at eighty-two percent. It's a long haul not a sprint for her. On her phone: something called Woodle, where you have to remove pins.
Title I Laughed at My Kids for Still Playing
Minecraft
Any time I see my adult son playing Minecraft, I rib him like a cross between a classic comedy bit. When he objects, I reply that I am doing this to toughen him up so he can mature and play games for grownups. It’s a very Scottish father/son relationship.
Most Impressive Gaming Family Member 2025
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
She was the clear winner for this one. She is a machine. Superior than I was at my peak gaming days in my prime.
Game I Played the Most
Marvel Snap
Nothing came close to the hours I spent on this exceptionally well-crafted card game wizard’s poker, with its constantly evolving range of cards and game variations.
Game I Wish I Had Played Less
Marvel Snap
The downside about games that constantly evolve their range is you have a moment of clarity and see it is all just an attempt to lure you into fear-of-missing-out driven microtransactions. So affection became resentment halfway through the year and it was deleted.
Title I Wish I Had Played More
Doom: The Dark Ages
Excellent reinvention of a legendary franchise. Captivating atmosphere from the beginning. I wish I could deal with my issues so effectively in real life.
Title I Wish I Had Played More (Puzzle-Focused Edition)
Blue Prince
I refuse to rush this gorgeous, distinctive game and I just lacked the time or headspace to give it what it deserved earlier this year. With holiday guests over the festive period, I will be playing this in the wee small hours after appropriate hospitality.
Title That Kept Me Sane When I Needed It
Balatro
I acknowledge Balatro was last year's surprise hit, but I was late to it. And it is remarkable. It just gets every single thing right. Crazy Poker is a fantastic concept, but the abilities behind the different wild cards are so creative it has become a game I could play any time. Throw in the charm of the card design, and this is an true pinnacle of gaming. I fantasize about being stuck in a broken-down lift for hours just so I have the perfect excuse but play it.
Game I Got the Most Flak For Criticising
Outer Worlds 2
I endured a minor pile-on when I mentioned how a specific bug in another game damaged the experience for me, but that other title is still a gargantuan gaming achievement in terms of overall polish – which I appreciated even more after slogging through Outer Worlds 2. So thank you to the commenter who took the time to contact me to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "missing the point". I mention that in the exact way, because I acknowledge the engagement, and she is obviously an sharp judge of character.
Game Everybody Loved That I Just Didn’t Get
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Fine. Give me a punishingly tough Metroidvania-esque thing and provide little guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "look around". Great fun. I get that it has great art and is ideal if you are into the genre, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I desire less in my mid-fifties. I was around back when all games were like this, and my patience is gone. It was acceptable when I was a kid, but the same could be said for many outdated things.
Biggest Gaming News of 2025
Close call between corporate partnerships that raised eyebrows, and premium pricing. Both difficult to justify and repugnant.
Games I Would Name My Children After, If I Was Ever Foolish Enough to Have More
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all make interesting names shouted from the doorstep at bedtime.
Part of My Body That Aches Most From Gaming
Right Thumb Joint. Seriously. I don’t know if it’s because of button mashing or endless scrolling, but it is sore like anything in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs insured back in the 90s.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2026
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to make 2026 last until the heat death of the universe.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2036
The Witcher 4.
