For much of the concluding season of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are held captive in a realm of memories built from the memories of Henry Creel. The search for freedom in "Escape from Camazotz" leads them to experience a defining event from Henry's childhood—a moment that potentially carries the key to defeating him once and for all.

The Discovery in the Mine Shaft

After locating Max in the psychic realm called Camazotz, Holly discovers she is hiding out in a grotto that Henry strangely fears. A clever observation a viewing device taken from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the source of fear lies outside of the cave. Matching her view through the cap, she and Max plummet into a subterranean passage.

There, they witness a child version of Henry encounter an injured and paranoid man. Attempting assistance, the man fires a gun, striking Henry in the hand. To protect himself, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly wonders aloud. Essentially, yes, but the trauma involved more than a fight for life.

Like many elements this season, the full story behind the mine shaft incident was first explored the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

An Interdimensional Incident and Stolen Research

This backstory explains the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which allegedly sent a U.S. Navy ship into a dimension dubbed the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the sole survivor was the captain, who emerged in a catatonic condition with an different blood composition.

The captain's son, Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this experiment in remote Nevada. One of his scientists took experimental components to hand over to the Communist spies, who were desperate to launch their version of the tests. That traitor in the cavern was that very thief.

So, What's in the Case?

Based on what is revealed about his research, the case most likely held samples of the unique blood type. At that moment, Henry is bleeding from his hand. He likely becomes contaminated upon contact with the blood, which triggered the development of his psychic abilities—powers he would inadvertently transfer to the test subjects Brenner would experiment on.

Alternatively, the container could have held dark matter that later made its way to the Hawkins lab, where it acts to anchor the Upside Down. *The First Shadow* reveals that the boy ended up in the Abyss, coming back after half a day fundamentally changed. From then on, he fights the whispers of a dark entity, much like how Will was controlled by the Mind Flayer in season 2.

A Weaponized Emotion

His lasting fear linked to that memory shows how deeply scarring the encounter was for him. While he orchestrates the collective consciousness and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy lingers. Vecna uses fear, and the show is setting up a final confrontation between him and Will, who has deliberately faced his greatest terrors to fortify himself.

Will's growth has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. Furthermore, Will now knows what his enemy truly fears, which could provide a key upper hand in the endgame conflict that awaits.
