Shoaib Bashir Earns Surprise Selection in English Test Series Team
England have opted for a twelve-player squad just 48 hours ahead of the first Ashes Test, with the 22-year-old spinner securing a surprise spot.
Bashir's selection indicates that the visiting team will delay until the morning of the first Test to decide whether the venue conditions favor four seamers or the addition of a spinner.
Both pace bowlers are part of the 12-man group, showing there are no doubts about their pace bowler’s condition.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse complete the attack, with Carse most likely to be omitted if Bashir enters the starting XI.
Pitch Factors Favor Seamers
The England coach had been anticipated to opt for an all-seam attack on a venue that has hosted five past matches.
In those games, 134 wickets have fallen to pace bowling, with only a small number to spin.
Of those 40 wickets, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has taken 29, while all visiting spinners together have just a handful.
At a venue known for its speed and carry, and whose curator, Isaac McDonald, stated that these characteristics are “permanent and not going to change,” a team relying on seamers is still the probable decision.
Alternative Choices Weighed
There had been speculation that Will Jacks could be parachuted into the side to offer some slow bowling while additionally bolstering the batting lineup.
But McCullum has chosen to keep faith with the young spinner, having said earlier this year that he would be his first-choice slow bowler for the series.
Earlier, Nathan Lyon described Bashir as “decent,” saying that “from my perspective, Jack Leach is still the English best spinner.”
“It is a massive role, and it can be a significant test for bowlers who lack experience in the past in these conditions,” Lyon remarked of slow bowling in Australian Tests.
“I won't reveal my strategies so they perform and excel out here.”
