Russell Wilson Fires Back at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Regarding Jaxson Dart Remarks

NY Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson did not hold back on online platforms this Tuesday, responding to recent criticism from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.

"Classless... but not surprised...," Wilson declared via social media. "Had no idea you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the media."

The quarterback's response pointed to the notorious Bounty Gate issue from 2009 to 2011, when Payton led the New Orleans Saints.

At that time, the NFL determined that the Saints had rewarded players for making hard hits on opponents. Consequently, Payton received a suspension from the NFL for one season.

What Sparked the Recent Exchange

The quarterback's response came after Payton made remarks after Denver's historic comeback victory over the Giants. The coach remarked that the Giants had "discovered new energy" with their new QB, who has taken over Wilson as the starting quarterback.

Additionally, Payton hinted that he had told team owner John Mara that he would prefer facing Wilson over Dart.

"I spoke to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We hoped that change would've happened long after our game,'" Payton commented.

Context of the Coach-QB Relationship

  • The quarterback was traded to the Denver from the Seahawks in 2022 and inked a five-year, $245M contract.
  • The Broncos went 4-11 in his debut year before Denver hired Payton, who was coming back to coaching after a stint in TV commentary.
  • Payton replaced Wilson late into the 2023 campaign, a decision that prevented the quarterback from suffering an injury.

Had Wilson stayed on the roster by spring 2024, his $37M salary for 2025 would have been guaranteed. In the end, Wilson was let go, ending the contentious breakup between the player and his mentor.
