Last year, actor Jude Law stated he “didn’t fear any repercussions” for playing Vladimir Putin in a new film. The movie, though, may align too neatly with the carefully constructed image circulated by official channels that, domestically, it reads as a compliment rather than a critique.

The Manufactured Superhero

For years, the Russian political apparatus and its pop-culture machine have collaborated to forge a made-to-measure version of the president. This character is a political superhero devoid of flaws, a former spy reimagined as a Russian James Bond who consistently understands beyond what he shows.

Screen-Based Support

One recent example is a TV series released last fall, directed by a Kremlin supporter. The protagonist is a fictional blue-eyed lieutenant colonel selected by fate to “save” the nation from disorder. While he is called Mikhail, the message is unmistakable: the savior must be a familiar security officer.

International depictions often end up buttressing this same narrative instead of debunking it. An adaptation based on a bestselling satirical novel aims to undermine the Putin cult by presenting him as a symptom but as a consequence, moving the focus to the spin doctors surrounding him.

The Fable of the Hesitant President

In the film, Putin is shown as having been chosen by influential figures to stabilise the nation because he is “young, athletic and a spy”. They visit him and practically plead him to become president. He replies is that he would prefer to rule from the background, desiring enduring influence.

This narrative is the Kremlin’s export myth: the cool, reluctant strategist guided by fate. Historically, these events ever happened.

The Truth Behind the Selection

No one ever begged him to take the job. The presidency was in essence a casting call with no shortage of contenders. At the centre to the selection stood a powerful businessman from the Yeltsin era who expected to run the country de facto.

• The shortlist featured several politicians, among them a reformer later murdered and a former spy chief.
• Per an expert who studied his rise, the chosen candidate simply fitted the required parameters: obedient, from the intelligence world, and not a communist or a liberal.
• A property developer familiar with the events stated the key criterion was manageability and faithfulness, not leadership.

Constructing the Spy Legend

Experts agree that the notion of Putin as a master operative was built after the fact. Stories about his clandestine activities in East Germany fall apart under examination. Fundamentally, he handled paperwork and technical tasks, a low-level clerk not engaged in actual agent work.

Interestingly, the shift to framing him as a “007” could partly have been inspired by Daniel Craig’s arrival as James Bond. His harder interpretation led local outlets and online audiences to make comparisons with Putin. Mashup posters swapping Craig’s face with his appeared on Moscow streets, fueling the increasing trend to see him as a Russian 007.

A Diplomatic Opportunity?

Given the casting, an actor well-liked by Russian audiences, the authorities will not miss the opportunity to frame his casting as a minor diplomatic triumph. Its omission of mass protests, the political rivals, or key figures from its narrative, even though it includes the past decade, is a welcome aspect for state propaganda.

Domestically, the president is often an omnipotent figure who never appears on screen. His influence is signaled through portraits or calls “from above”. Now, he at last gets a famous actor's visage—one that could unintentionally echo the very myths it perhaps aims to question.
