A senior Russian general has been fatally wounded following an detonation in Moscow, according to reports from authorities.

The attack took place on Monday morning when an explosive device placed beneath a vehicle detonated, leading to the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.

Sarvarov served as the head of the armed forces' unit responsible for operational readiness.

Investigators mentioned that one possible explanation points to the alleged involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. To date, Ukraine has offered no public response.

Scene of the Attack

Officials have been sent to the scene, which is said to be in a southerly district of the capital.

Media coverage state the blast happened in a parking area close to a residential building.

History of Targeted Attacks

Since the start of the full-scale conflict in Ukraine, a string of Russian military commanders have been targeted within Moscow.

This new event echoes other high-profile incidents, such as:

  • General Yaroslav Moskalik was died in a car bomb attack in Moscow earlier this year.
  • General Igor Kirillov was killed in late 2024 when a explosive hidden on a scooter was triggered from afar.

While a source from Ukraine in the past connected Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such claims are never publicly admitted as a matter of official stance.

Hostilities has increasingly seen covert operations extending into the center of the Russian capital.

The probe into General Sarvarov's death continues to be active.
